The only battle Georgia O’Connor lost   was cancer. The British-born boxer’s death was announced on May 22nd after a series of unfortunate events, including a misdiagnosis.

The death of the young boxer, who went undefeated  in her professional career as a fighter, was announced through Boxxer’s social media, the promoter with whom O’Connor worked.

“A true warrior in and out of the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous, and determined young woman far too soon. Georgia was loved, respected, and admired by her friends here at BOXXER. Our thoughts are with her loved ones during this difficult time,” Boxxer wrote.

What did boxer Georgia O’Connor die of and what happened to her?

The British red gloves star died weeks after being diagnosed with  terminal cancer , although he did not specify where in his body he developed it.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time he’d faced health problems. When he was diagnosed with colitis, he confessed to other complications he’d experienced. “I’ve had bad luck with my health in the past, when I almost died from blood clots in my lungs.”

Georgia O’Connor attributed terminal cancer to medical neglect

At the beginning of the year, when she revealed that she had cancer, she attributed the advanced stage of her illness to a  misdiagnosis by doctors , who initially told her she had ulcerative colitis (UC) and refused to treat her properly.

“For 17 weeks, since the beginning of October, I’ve been in constant pain, shuttling between the RVI and Newcastle emergency rooms, knowing deep down something was seriously wrong. I said from the start that  I felt it was cancer. I knew the risks . I have colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), two diseases that dramatically increase your chances of getting it (…) But no doctor would listen to me, damn it. Not one of them took me seriously,” she said in one of her last posts, last February.

Georgia mentioned that on more than one occasion she asked the doctors at the medical units where she was treated to run the necessary tests for cancer, but they turned a deaf ear to her requests.

“They lied to me, told me it was nothing,  made me feel like I was exaggerating . They refused to do the scans. They refused to investigate, to listen. One even told me that ‘it’s all in my head.’ And now? The cancer has spread (…) They could have done something before it got to this stage. But they didn’t,” she added at the time.

These were the last months of boxer Georgia O’Connor’s battle with cancer.

On February 18, the British boxer posted a birthday post in which she shared that the past year in particular has been challenging not only because of her cancer diagnosis, but also because of a significant loss.

“The last few months have been a roller coaster. I was pregnant with a beautiful baby, suffered a miscarriage, and then  was diagnosed with ‘incurable’ cancer . But I still feel on top of the world!” she said.

In that post, he made clear his considerable weight loss; at the time, he weighed 59 kilos. He mentioned that, due to the loss of muscle mass and weight, his clothes no longer fit him as they used to.

“Sometimes  I have to use crutches or a wheelchair to get around , but I’m lucky to have people willing to push me. I’m spending my birthday on the train to a hospital in London to see if I can get specialized treatment,” she explained.

Unfortunately, her weakened immune system led to sepsis, which led to her being hospitalized in March. “The ambulance crew told my parents I had about four hours to get the proper antibiotics to help me recover, otherwise I would die.”

The exact date of Georgia O’Connor’s death, which was publicly announced on May 22, is unknown. She married her partner on the 9th of the same month, who supported her throughout the process.
